Description:
In little more than 25 years – so the theory goes at least – one-quarter of the country’s electricity needs will come via homegrown nuclear power. Given the chequered history of attempts to bring through new nuclear, reaching that target by 2050 from the current 15 per cent looks ambitious.
But one place central to turning those aspirations into reality is the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in South Yorkshire, which sits on land which was once part of Orgreave Colliery.

The facility has been used since 2012 as a base for researchers to test and develop millions of pounds worth of manufacturing innovations for the nuclear industry.

It mostly takes place in a giant open-plan workshop with offices on the top floor which overlook the hive of activity taking place below. It is in these offices where The Yorkshire Post is meeting CEO Andrew Storer.

In the earlier part of his career, Storer, originally from Derby, worked his way up through the ranks at Rolls-Royce to become part of their team tasked with setting up a civil nuclear business.

An initial political push in the early 2010s to find sites around the country for new nuclear power stations – a key factor in the initial establishment of the Nuclear AMRC which had Rolls-Royce as its lead industrial partner – ultimately fizzled out, partly as a consequence of concerns about the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan affecting investment decisions.

Storer joined the University of Sheffield-owned Nuclear AMRC in 2015 and was determined to find a viable future for the centre despite the altered political landscape.

It opened up to the nuclear decommissioning market, as well as defence and fusion reactors. We enter the World of Kids Rule Play, in Heath Hayes (Cannock). We meet a mom with a daughter with Down Syndrome, who wants to create a new play centre that caters for all but with regular events for special needs children too. It's already big with a huge soft play, sensory sections, role play sections and a party room, and will soon be opening its outside area too and further function room.

Malaysian youth should fully understand the government's objectives behind the rationalisation of fuel and electricity subsidies, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In his speech at the National Youth Day celebration in Melaka on Saturday (May 25), the Prime Minister also highlighted that 85 percent of Malaysians were unaffected by the government's decision to increase the electricity tariff, clarifying that the impact was limited to multinational corporations and large export-oriented companies.

WATCH MORE: https://thestartv.com/c/news
SUBSCRIBE: https://cutt.ly/TheStar
LIKE: https://fb.com/TheStarOnline

Euro NCAP officially announced a major milestone in the development towards a Truck Safe rating scheme. This is in direct response to data showing that while trucks represent only 3% of vehicles on Europe’s roads they are involved in almost 15% of all EU road fatalities. At NCAP24, in front of an audience of international road safety experts and industry, Euro NCAP will showcase what elements the organisation is currently considering as part of a future Truck Safe rating and how it intends to evaluate and benchmark truck performance.

Trucks play a vital role in a vibrant and productive economy. However, data shows there is a disproportionate number of truck-related fatalities across Europe. Euro NCAP’s future rating scheme is designed to go further and faster than current EU truck safety regulations, while also driving innovation and balancing the needs of the different commercial vehicle sectors across Europe.

Today marks a significant moment in the development of Euro NCAP’s Truck Safe rating scheme. Sadly, when trucks are involved in crashes, their size and weight mean there is a greater risk of fatalities – especially for more vulnerable road users (VRUs). Euro NCAP today highlights the need for trucks to be better equipped with life-saving technologies, particularly related to crash avoidance, vision, and aspects of post-crash rescue. The protocols announced today will be formally published next month and demonstrate that best practice test methods developed over the last decade for passenger cars can be turned into useful guidelines for the design of future, safer heavy trucks. By publicly presenting the procedures and requirements ahead of the rating, we hope that the industry will take note and react accordingly. At NCAP24, we are delighted to be joined by key stakeholders in the industry and vehicle manufacturers including DAF, Scania, Volvo, and ZF who are demonstrating their state-of-the-art technologies.

A woman with Down Syndrome beamed with delight when everyone on her flight joined in to sing Happy Birthday to her. 24-year-old Grace Reber, from Oklahoma, was flying to California to be part of a conference that celebrates moms of individuals with Down Syndrome and special needs. Grace has never let her condition define her, her mom, Bonnie Reber, said, as she runs her own business, GracePlace Art, which has a popular Instagram page. Though Grace was set to have a vending booth at the conference, Bonnie said she felt bad about making her daughter fly on her birthday and wanted to make things special so Grace could celebrate all day long. After she and Grace boarded the plane, Bonnie told Southwest Airlines flight attendants that it was her daughter's birthday, hoping they would give her a little attention on the flight. What followed, though, exceeded even Bonnie's expectations, as the crew took it upon themselves to ask those on the plane if they could sing Happy Birthday to Grace. Everyone on board was happy to oblige – even turning on their overhead lights to appear as if there were tens of makeshift candles. As everyone started singing, proud Bonnie recorded her daughter's reaction, with Grace beaming from ear to ear.
