After spending a full day in the historic town of Knaresborough earlier this week, I was looking forward to taking a relaxing break and I knew where to go.

I had been searching for places to visit that are often overlooked and I stumbled upon a hidden jewel - Bebra Gardens.

As I got to the top of the stairs and looked out, I was blown away by the glorious views.

By JOHN DEVLIN and MARTYN McLAUGHLIN

Disabled artists across Scotland have called on venues, curators, and further education bodies involved in the visual arts scene to make widespread improvements around access and representation, with several practitioners warning of a lack of understanding of the barriers facing artists and audiences at cultural spaces.

A new documentary for The Scotsman, filmed and produced by John Devlin, reveals how some physically disabled artists have been unable to attend venues due to a lack of disabled access, and left feeling “unwelcome” due to the restrictions in place. They have questioned whether organisations unable to stage accessible exhibitions should continue to receive public funding, and warned the knock-on effect of a lack of representation could discourage young disabled Scots from pursuing a career in the arts.

The issues around accessibility and representation have flared up ahead of the upcoming Glasgow International festival of contemporary art. The programme for the prestigious biennial event includes an exhibition at the Celine Gallery, located on the the third floor of a tenement building in the city’s southside, accessible only by three flights of stairs. One artist, Penny Anderson, described that decision as “wrong.”

The Glasgow-based artist and sculptor, who has multiple sclerosis, said it was unclear who, if anyone, was responsible for ensuring such exhibitions were accessible, and was left frustrated after raising the issue with Glasgow Life, councillors in the city, and Creative Scotland.

Under the Equality Act 2010, art galleries are required to make “reasonable adjustments,” if asked, to ensure that disabled people can use its services. Ms Anderson said the legislation should be followed by Glasgow International. “They have to make reasonable adjustments to allow inclusion, and I think a reasonable adjustment is only including accessible galleries,” she explained.”

Ms Anderson told The Scotsman the accessibility issues went beyond any one gallery, and said there was a widespread lack of knowledge across the sector about how to include disabled artists and visitors. “They don’t understand the different levels of mobility impairment of physical disability,” she added. “I’ve had people say, ‘But we’ve got a ramp’. Ramps make my life even harder. What I need is stairs and a handrail. Even if you have a ramp, wheelchairs might not be able to use the ramp, and I think people think they know, and just assume they know, but they don’t actually ask disabled people.”

Ruth Mutch, an illustrator, who is autistic and has Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - a condition that affects the joints, causing hypermobility, digestive problems and joint pain as well as extreme fatigue - echoed Ms Anderson’s concerns, recounting her experience at college where she was unable to access materials without assistance.

Andrey Rublev admitted ‘I don’t remember behaving worse at a Slam ever’ after he kicked and screamed his way out of the French Open.

The No. 6 seed was beaten 7-6, 6-2, 6-4 by Italian Matteo Arnaldi on Friday and – by no means for the first time in his career – Rublev was the author of his downfall.

After going two breaks down in the second set, the 26-year-old Muscovite smashed his racket twice into the ground and, as he went to sit down for the changeover, kicked the bench three times.

Rublev roared in frustration, smashed his racket, and drove himself to the brink of tears.

After the match, he sat with head bowed and long red hair straggling down over his face, and attempted to explain such needless self-sabotage.

‘Completely disappointed with myself the way I behaved, the way I performed,’ he said. ‘I think it was the first time I ever behaved that bad.

‘The way I behave I put myself completely down, and I give Matteo wings to fly, and he was flying third set unbelievable. It was too late to do something.’

Rublev had a poor start to the clay season but came to Roland Garros with the wind in his sails after winning the Madrid Masters.

‘I was struggling, and then I had a really good result in Madrid. Now I'm playing well again. I feel that I have a good game, and I'm improving. The problem is the head, that today I kill myself, and that's it.’

He tried to explain how things fell apart after he lost the first-set tiebreak and admitted that he ‘tanked’ at the end of the second set. ‘In the tiebreak I had chances, and then second set I started already on emotions.

‘But somehow I was able to break back. Then out of nowhere, again, I collapsed with myself, I got emotional, I lost my serve, and then I lost it completely and basically I almost - almost, no, I tanked the second set, and then it was too late.’

Tennis is a frustrating game – go down to your local courts for evidence of that – and players have to endure its travails alone. But it is difficult to fathom how this articulate, mild-mannered Dr Jekyll can become such a raging Mr Hyde on a tennis court.

Rublev’s incredible hand speed through his shots gives him the power to trouble anyone in the game. But until he can quell the raging tempests that swirl in his mind, his full potential is set to remain sadly unrealized.

In a marked contrast, Rublev’s fellow red-head Jannik Sinner continued his serene progress through the draw with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Russian Pavel Kotov.
England used to relish playing in front of a home crowd under Sarina Wiegman, but it is starting to feel like that magic is wearing off.

Defeat against France, their first loss in a qualifying fixture for 22 years, leaves them with work to do if they want to retain their European crown in Switzerland next year.

Only the top two teams will progress automatically from what is a tough Euro 2025 qualifying group, with England now in third place.

They now have to travel to France, who they play again on Tuesday, before facing Ireland at home and Sweden away in July.

Perhaps what is most concerning for Wiegman is that her side has taken just one point from their two home fixtures.

The Lionesses lacked a spark and, in truth, many looked tired after a testing season. Elisa De Almeida’s superb volley, which brought France level after Beth Mead had opened the scoring, was undoubtedly the best moment of a game lacking quality.

‘The result is disappointing and I think unnecessary,’ Wiegman said.

‘I think our performance was good for most parts of the game. The first part of course was very different than [what] we were expecting, so we had to find our feet to get started. After that we did well, we scored a goal, I think we had chances of scoring more, and then they scored from a corner. That was disappointing.

‘Then in the second half, I think we controlled the match more than we did in the first half. But we didn't score, we created almost no chances, so it's that pass that will create the best chance, or the touch, or the cross, in many moments we played pretty well but it's very frustrating that we then conceded a goal from a corner [set-piece], we know they're very good at that, so we wanted to do that [defend set pieces] very well, and in some moments we did but in too many moments we didn't.’

For the first time since February 2023, Wiegman was able to select a centre-back pairing of Leah Williamson and Millie Bright, with both players having spent time out injured in the last year.

But the decision not to select Alex Greenwood, who has enjoyed a fine season with Manchester City, at either center-back or left-back was puzzling.

Greenwood was arguably England’s best player at the World Cup last summer and her composure on the ball and passing ability was missed.

Things got off to a bad start for England when Mary Earps was forced off after just five minutes.

The goalkeeper, who was making her 50th international appearance, appeared to twist her hip after a routine pass and despite efforts to continue, was replaced by Hannah Hampton.

After a cagey opening, Ella Toone could have put England ahead mid-way through the half when she connected with Lauren Hemp’s cross in the box, but her effort spun just wide.

Hemp continued to cause problems down the left wing and, on the half-hour mark, created the opener. The forward’s cross evaded Alessia Russo and Georgia Stanway, who was perhaps fouled by Selma Bacha as she tried to connect with the deliv

Slam dunk! The best biscuit dunker in Britain has been found – and it’s a creative designer from North London.

Simon Girma won the inaugural National Dunking Championship at Underbelly Boulevard in Soho, London.

The tea and biscuit lover, aged 35, entered the McVitie's tournament which challenged eight contestants to compete in a ‘dunk off’.

They submerge their biscuit in a hot beverage for the longest duration possible without it breaking – with one point awarded for every second it was submerged.

Upon removing the biscuit, it must remain intact without breaking – failing this, the participant loses the round.

The person with the most points after three dunk offs wins, and goes on to the next round, under the watchful eye of biscuit experts.

Each round features a different biscuit, challenging contestants' knowledge of each one’s dunking characteristics.

Simon was crowned victorious after a series of intense dunk off rounds – where he played a Digestive, Rich Tea, Chocolate Hobnob and Gingernut – including a sudden death tie breaker.

In the final, both Simon and his opponent Bruno got 58 points over three rounds – and as a result, they went on to a tie break round, with Simon scoring 25 to Bruno’s 23 points.

And the biscuit that delivered the winning dunk? The Chocolate Hobnob, beloved of dunkers around the world.

Of his win, Simon said: “I’m so proud to be the winner of the first ever McVitie’s Dunking Championship.

“It was an amazing competition – credit to all the other contestants who were worthy opponents, but I knew my extensive dunk training regime would come good.

“Having a slow and steady hand, and lots of practicing with a variety of biscuits so you know each one well.”

“It just goes to show that having a biscuit with my tea has finally paid off.

A panel of judges – led by the biscuit makers chief dunking officer Dr Helen Pilcher - oversaw gameplay.

One of the standout moments of the championship was the Jaffa Cake round – a less common dunk choice, and one which flummoxed players thanks to its unique sponge-like texture.

The Rich Tea round also proved perilous, as contestants worked to keep their nerve and avoid a dunking disaster.

Research conducted by Dr Pilcher found a Hobnob can withstand 12.5 seconds of dunking - depending on hot drink temperature.

Whereas the ‘dunking danger zone’ of a Rich Tea kicks in at 8.8 seconds – deeming it a higher risk biscuit.

Dr Pilcher said: “Being the judge of the National Dunking Championship felt like the perfect evolution of my role as chief dunking officer.

“The contestants were all amazing and had brilliant biscuit knowledge.

“As a dunking enthusiast myself, it was extremely rewarding to see my dunking research put into practice and brought to life in such a unique way.”
