Scotland fan Ethan Walker cycles to Munich after incredible health recovery

A small team of Tartan Army foot-soldiers have decided to cycle to Euro24 in Munich to help Scotland-daft, young footballer, Ethan Walker realise his dream.

Ethan Walker might just be the most committed Scotland fan there is. He's preparing to cycle 1200km to watch his heroes only eight months after a serious accident where he sustained multiple injuries.

(Ethan Walker)

In September 2023 the footballer, who left local side Huntly FC aged 17 to attend a football scholarship in the U.S. was hit by a car in New York state.
Tragically he sustained life threatening injuries including multiple fractures, two brain haemorrhages and the complete dislocation of his right knee. The fractured bones included his skull, shoulder, hand, pelvis and knee. On discharge from intensive care Ethan was still unable to swallow and required months of tube feeding.
The assault to his knee was huge - all his knee ligaments and cartilage were torn, the equivalent of 5 ACL injuries.

Ethan's mum, who was at home in Scotland when the incident happened, was notified and within a day she was by her son's side in hospital.
After six weeks in intensive care Ethan travelled back to Scotland where he met top orthopaedic surgeon Professor Gordon Mackay of the Mackay Clinic.
In a recent turn of events, Eminem stirred controversy with his new track 'Houdini' by referencing the unfortunate incident involving fellow rapper Tory Lanez shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. The track, released on May 31st, reignited discussions around the altercation that took place back in July 2020 after a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s mansion. Stallion's courage in speaking out against Lanez's alleged actions was commendable, yet she faced backlash and doubt within the rap community, notably exemplified in Drake's track 'Circo Loco'. Lanez was later convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison for the incident. Eminem's inclusion of Stallion's ordeal in his lyrics prompted swift backlash from fans, who criticized him for exploiting her trauma and questioned whether it was an attempt to remain relevant in the industry as he ages.

Six in 10 Americans swear they can “get all the exercise they need” without ever stepping foot inside a gym.

A new study of 2,000 U.S. adults found the average person considers themselves active five times per week and exercises four times per week — and 54% said they “never” go to the gym.

Since many skip the gym, they’re getting their exercise in other ways. Almost all respondents surveyed (98%) believe they can get a workout in while taking on everyday tasks.

Those tasks include harnessing the power of everyday activities like walking around the neighborhood (74%), taking the stairs (60%), doing yard work (59%), cleaning the home (59%), walking the dog (56%) and bringing in groceries into the home (42%).

Other tasks compared to exercises include gardening (40%), taking the trash out (36%), stretching after getting out of bed (35%), doing dishes or laundry (33%), standing on your feet for at least four hours (30%) or even getting kids ready for school (10%).

Commissioned by Nature’s Bounty, a vitamin and probiotic brand, and conducted by OnePoll, the study revealed 70% believe they’re healthy and many compared their level of health with different physical activity levels. Embracing these activities as part of a balanced lifestyle could contribute to overall well-being.

Ten percent reported feeling as if they were a superhero or professional athlete, while 17% felt 10 years younger.

Nearly half (48%) of people think back to their previous week’s physical activities during the weekend.

Seventy percent said they feel “impressed” with their activity levels from the previous week.

While more than three-quarters (77%) were reportedly aware of how active their bodies are during the week, 65% said they’d be willing to go further in their activities, exploring their physical capabilities while exercising.

Of them, an overwhelming 80% at least occasionally test their physical limits while exercising. Benefits are then seen as feeling more confident (54%), walking farther (52%) and noticing their body looks better (46%).

Most (87%) imagine they could accomplish tasks they could never do before if they could just improve their physical abilities by 10%.

“It’s encouraging to recognize how everyday activities can feel like feats of strength to so many people and to understand that our bodies have an innate ability to support our overall health and wellness too — the power is already within us,” said Jaclyn Safrath, MS, MPH, medical affairs manager, Nestlé Health Science, maker of Nature’s Bounty. “But it’s clear that many want to constantly improve their health — finding ways to give that extra 10 percent and push what their bodies can do.”

At the core of feeling physically apt, the study found a connection between diet and activity levels. More than a quarter (28%) believe their diet has a major impact on their immune system and 24% similarly believe their diet majorly impacts physical activity levels.

Ninety percent believe their overall digestive health impacts their physicality and immune system.

To improve their digestive health, 63% would likely use a probiotic supplement to support their digestive health.

Three in four would be willing to change their diet for the better if it could improve their physical activity levels. Over half (54%) would change most of or all of what they eat, as a result.

“The human body is a brilliant system and every day it’s hustling on our behalf,” continued Safrath. “Take, for instance, the digestive system where tens of trillions of ‘good’ bacteria already live in the gut supporting so many of the body’s functions including immune health. Probiotics help supplement the body’s own ingenious system.”

TOP 10 EVERYDAY TASK EXERCISES
- Walking around the neighborhood - 74%
- Taking the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator - 60%
- Doing yard work - 59%
- Cleaning the home - 59%
- Taking the dog for a walk - 56%
- Bringing groceries into the home - 42%
- Gardening - 40%
- Taking the trash out - 36%
- Stretching after getting out of bed - 35%
- Doing dishes or laundry - 33%

Survey methodology:
This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by Nature’s Bounty between Feb. 28 and Mar. 4, 2024. It was conducted by market research company OnePoll, whose team members are members of the Market Research Society and have corporate membership to the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR).

Pose: Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I)
Description:
Warrior I is a foundational standing pose that strengthens the legs, opens the hips, and stretches the front of the body. It is an excellent pose for building strength and flexibility in the legs, which is ideal for beginners.

Instructions:
Starting Position:

Begin in Mountain Pose (Tadasana), standing tall with your feet hip-width apart and your arms at your sides.
Step Back:

Take a step back with your left foot, approximately 3-4 feet, and turn your left foot out to a 45-degree angle. Keep your right foot pointing forward.
Bend the Front Knee:

Bend your right knee so that it is directly above your right ankle. Your right thigh should be parallel to the ground. Ensure your knee is not extending past your ankle to protect your joint.
Square the Hips:

Rotate your hips forward so that they are squared with the front of the mat. This may require adjusting the position of your back foot slightly.
Raise the Arms:

On an inhale, raise your arms overhead, with your palms facing each other or touching. Keep your shoulders relaxed and away from your ears.
Lengthen the Spine:

Reach up through your fingertips, lengthening your spine. Engage your core muscles to support your lower back.
Hold the Pose:

Hold the pose for 5-10 breaths, focusing on your balance and the stretch in your legs.
Release:

To release, exhale and step your left foot forward to return to Mountain Pose. Repeat the pose on the opposite side, stepping back with your right foot.
Benefits:
Strengthens: Legs, ankles, feet, and shoulders.
Stretches: Chest, lungs, shoulders, neck, belly, and groin.
Improves: Focus, balance, and stability.
Modifications:
For Balance: If balancing is challenging, practice the pose near a wall or use a chair for support.
For Knee Pain: Place a folded blanket under the back knee for additional cushioning.
For Shoulder Discomfort: Keep your hands on your hips instead of raising them overhead.
Tips for Beginners:
Focus on proper alignment to avoid injury. Use a mirror or ask a friend to check your form.
Keep your breath steady and even, using each inhale to lengthen and each exhale to deepen into the pose.
Gradually increase the duration you hold the pose as your strength and flexibility improve.
By incorporating Warrior I into your yoga routine, you'll develop stronger and more flexible legs, which is a great foundation for more advanced poses and overall fitness.
